MUART 254 Digital Design Studio

This sophomore course focused on software and hardware used in graphic design. Students learned page layout, illustration and image manipulation programs, their individual strengths, and how to use them together. I introduced Lynda.com as an alternate form of software instruction for this course and integrated this resource into the classroom.

Student Work for Project One: Einstein’s Dreams Book Covers
In this project, I asked students to read Einstein’s Dreams and then pick one chapter that intrigued them. Focusing on that one chapter, each student had to design a collage style book cover for the novel. This project was a teaching tool for Photoshop.

Student Work: Sequencing Project
In this project students were asked to cut out 5 × 5 inch squares from a magazine. Each student then selected the lyrics of a particular song, merged them with the random imagery produced by the squares, and created a sequential accordian fold layout. The resulting brochure served as a promotional piece for the song. This project developed skills in InDesign.
